Mr. Weldon DeShazo Shelton of South Boston died peacefully at his home April 12, 2012. He was born in South Boston on Oct. 25, 1939. Weldon was the son of the late Sidnor James Shelton and Lois Cole Shelton.
A lifetime resident of South Boston, Weldon made his first career as a realtor and auctioneer. After his retirement from real estate, he tirelessly promoted the art career of his wife, Karen. Weldon was a long time and active member of First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and on numerous boards and committees. Weldon was an integral part of establishing the fledging arts community in South Boston.
Weldon served on the Economic Development Authority and also as a long time instructor for the YMCA. Weldon’s love of nature and deep connection to the land was one of his most defining characteristics and the one his family and friends most strongly admired. He will be missed by all those who knew him.
Weldon is survived by his wife, Karen Lynn Stanford Shelton; his son, John Shelton of Durham, N.C., his son, David and wife Christina of Williamsburg; his grandson, William Shelton; his granddaughter, Erin Shelton; and his sister, Marye Pond, and her husband, Frank, of Crewe.
