James Earl Hughes


Mr. James Earl Hughes, age 79, of 300 Parkland Drive, Danville passed away early Tuesday morning at Riverside Health and Rehab Center after a decline in health for one year.

Mr. Hughes was born on Jan. 27, 1933 in Halifax County, a son of the late Earl Winston Hughes and the late Annie Richie Hughes. Mr. Hughes was employed by Dan River Inc. as a supply clerk until his retirement.  He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Brush Arbor Baptist Church where he served as the Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He also served with the prison ministry. He was married to Barbara Riddle Hughes, who predeceased him Oct. 31, 1995.

Mr. Hughes is survived by one son, James Alan Hughes of the residence; a special friend, Naomi Satterfield; five sisters, Mary H. Hawker of Danville, Ocie Mae H. Gammon of Roxboro, N.C., Doris H. Ford of Melbourne, Fla., Janice H. Setney of Lake City, Fla., and Ruth H. Smith of Halifax. He was predeceased by three sisters, Ella H. Hanks, Lucille H. Ferrell and Ellen H. Booth. Also, surviving is a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012, from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel in Danville with the Revs. Kirk Shaw, Stephen Lamb and Ed Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with Military Rites to be performed by Dan River Post 1097, American Legion Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening, April 20, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:30 and at other times will be at the residence of his niece, Nancy Farmer Jennings, 429 Northmont Boulvard, Danville.
