Mrs. Annie Baker Young Torian of Florence Avenue, Virgilina died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County June 15, 1916, and was 94 years old. She was the daughter of the late Henry Preston Young Sr., and Hallie Jackson Cole Young and was the granddaughter of the late Captain Dr. Edward Rush Young Sr. and Emily Lovelace Young. She was born and reared at the Young family homeplace, “Cedar Lane,” near Ingram. Mrs. Torian was married to the late Samuel Mason Torian Jr., and they made their lifelong home on Florence Avenue in Virgilina.
She was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church. She graduated from Wilson Memorial High School and attended Averett College where she received a secretarial diploma.
Mrs. Torian was employed by Field Enterprises Corporation, the publishers of World Book Encyclopedia and Childcraft, and was an area manager. She was also a former member of the Virgilina Woman’s Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Hallie Torian Owen and husband Rufus III of Alton; her son, Samuel Mason Torian III of Virgilina; and five grandchildren, Rufus Owen IV of Alton, Daniel Sydnor Owen of Charlotte, N.C., Jackson Taylor Owen of Virgilina, Samuel M. Torian IV and his wife, Penny, of Berryville, Sarah Ellen Torian and her husband, Dr. Bland Whitley, of Princeton, N.J.; three great-grandsons, Jacob Heinz Torian, John Atwood Torian and Samuel Mason Whitley; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Byrd Young of South Boston; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Torian was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Mildred Murray Torian; two brothers, Henry Preston Young Jr., Edward Rush Young II; and two sisters, Nancy Young Owen and Elizabeth Young Sippley.
The family received visitors at Powell Funeral Home Thursday, Feb. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held today, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rich Henderson and the Rev. Norman Talley conducting. Burial will be in the Virgilina Cemetery.
