Mr. Richard Mathew Watts Jr. of Smithfield, N.C., formerly of Halifax County, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, in Smithfield. He was born in Scottsburg Jan. 4, 1925 and was 85 years of age. He was the son of the late Richard and Minnie Snead Watts and was married to Hilda Womack Watts, who survives.
Mr. Watts was a member of Dan River Baptist Church, Scottsburg United Methodist Church, VFW, VA Post 8163 and a World War II US Marine Veteran. He was a retired mechanic/welder at Burlington Industries and enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Kevin Watts and wife, Nancy, of Smithfield; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Watts and Cameron Watts, both of Smithfield; and one sister, Lucille Sutor, of Petersburg.
A graveside services for Mr. Watts was held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery in Scottsburg with Military Rites with the Rev. Doug Sasser officiating.
