Mrs. Gladys Gilliland Lacks of 4085 Bethel Road, Scottsburg died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at her home. She was born in Halifax County the daughter of the late Extra Herbert Gilliland and Melissa Mylum Gilliland and was married to the late Thomas Currie Lacks.
Mrs. Lacks was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member, libarian and was very active with the WMU. She was a member of the Halifax Woman’s Club, and the V.P.I. Extension Homemaker’s Club. She was also active in the Halifax County Retired Teacher’s association. She was a graduate of Scottsburg High School and attended Radford University and taught in the Halifax County Public Schools for 39 years having taught at Wolf Trap Elementary, Scottsburg Elementary and Clays Mill Elementary schools.
Survivors of Mrs. Lacks include one daughter, Sandra Lacks of Harrisonburg; one niece, Barbara Chaney Baggett of Atlantic Beach, NC and one great-nephew, Baker Lee ‘Kip’ Carter of Mount Pleasant, SC.
Five sisters, Mattie Dance, Lula Gregory, Bertha Chaney, Ollie Gilliland and Ruth Kent; and two brothers, Herbert and Preston Gilliland, also preceded Mrs. Lacks in death.
Funeral services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Greenwood Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends Tuesday night at Powell Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30, and other times at the home.
