Mr. James Kelly McKinney of 1102 Coleman Road, Scottsburg died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at his home. He was born in Halifax County March 21, 1925 and was 84 years of age. He was the son of the late Roy Allen McKinney and Virginia Mae Powell McKinney and was married to Mary Louise Dunkley McKinney, who survives.
Mr. McKinney was a former two term fifth district representative of the Halifax County Board of Supervisors, was a member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army Bronze Star Recipient of World War II. Mr. McKinney was a member of American Legion Post 8 and VFW Post 8243 (Halifax) and a member of Clover Lions Club. He was a retired route salesman for a wholesale distributor.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include five sons, Gerald McKinney Sr. and wife, Sharon, and James E. McKinney, both of Halifax, Kenneth R. McKinney and John A. McKinney, both of Scottsburg and Ronald M. McKinney and wife, Nancy, of New Hampshire; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles A. McKinney and wife, Bernice, of Scottsburg.
One grandchild also preceded Mr. McKinney in death.
Funeral services will be held at Powell Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ann Norton officiating. Burial will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens with Military Rites.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 – 8:30 p.m. and other times at his home.
