Mary Ellen Cavanaugh Duncan

Mrs. Mary Ellen Cavanaugh Duncan of 4126 Leda Grove Road, Nathalie died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Duncan was born in Washington, DC January 6, 1939, and was 70 years of age. She was the daughter of the late William Patrick Cavanaugh and Christina Eva Pfeil Cavanaugh and was married to Richard E. ‘Buddy’ Duncan.

Mrs. Duncan worked for the U.S. Government in the Agriculture-Tobacco Division in Washington, DC for 35 years, also worked for the U.S. Postal Service and H & R Block. She was co-owner of Little Country Pleasures Antique Shop. Mary was an avid bowler and served as secretary of the Coca Cola League. She enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques as well as dolls. She attended First Baptist Church of Republican Grove where she taught Sunday School.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Gary Thomas Orme Sr. and wife, Kimberly, of Enterprise, WVA and Earle Thomas Orme III of Nathalie; one sister, Betty Vakas of Arnold, MD; four brothers, Thomas Cavanaugh of Green Castle, PA, William Cavanaugh of St. Leonard, MD, Robert Cavanaugh of Wedowee, AL and Amiel ‘Moose’ Cavanaugh of Clover; one step-daughter, Mitzi Duncan Waller and husband, Ronnie, of Nathalie; one step-son, Richard Edward Duncan Jr. of Nathalie; seven grandchildren, Gary ‘Tommy’ Orme Jr., Christopher Orme, Jennifer Orme, Joseph Arnold, Blair Hall, Blake Waller and Katlyn Duncan; four great-grandchildren; and two special friends, Mrs. Rosalie Hill and Ms. Clydia Mae Davis.

One daughter, Julie Anne Orme; and one brother, Arthur Cavanaugh, also preceded Mrs. Duncan in death.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at Powell Funeral Home Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at her home.
