Leon (Lee) Stagg Newman, 93, died peacefully on Oct. 15 at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, NC. He was the youngest son of the late Mrs. and Rev. Dr. Charles E. Newman of Virgilina, longtime pastor of the Union United Church of Christ in Virgilina.
Mr. Newman was a graduate of Elon University and North Carolina State University, where he received a chemical engineering degree. He worked eight years as an engineer for Alcoa and 36 years for Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. as technical manager for plants in West Virginia, Wales, Bahrain, and Ghana. Mr. Newman received the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America, the highest scouting award given a volunteer, and was active with Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society, and his church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha Davis Newman, of Asheville; a son, Dr. L. Stagg Newman Jr., and wife, Dr. Cheryl F. Newman, of Candler, NC; a daughter, Anne Newman, and husband, Dr. Paul Nadler, of Metuchen, NJ; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Joel Nadler.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Nov. 7, at St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of your choice or to St. Giles Chapel for the new health-care chapel and gardens, Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, 1617 Hendersonville Rd., Asheville, NC 28803.
