Billy Marshall Granger

Mr. Billy Marshall Granger of 5133 Clays Mill Road, Scottsburg died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born February 22, 1925 and was 83 years of age. He was the son of the late John Cabell Granger and Lena Clark Granger and was married to the late Lorine Yancey Granger.

Mr. Granger was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and Sunday school secretary. He was a member of Kern’s Lodge #143 where he was past master and past secretary, French Lodge #270, Bethel Ruritan Club and the Halifax County Electoral Board.

He was a Marine veteran of World War II, having served on Iwo Jima and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a retired farmer and businessman, having owned and operated Clays Mill Store from 1968-1987.

Mr. Billy Marshall Granger is survived by one son, Bill Granger and wife Susan of Halifax; one grandson, Drew Granger of Halifax; one brother, Cecil Granger of Halifax; and one sister-in-law, Jean Carol Martin of South Boston.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Joan Dale Granger; two brothers, Waverly Granger and Ernest Granger; and by one sister, Justine Powell.

Funeral services for Mr. Billy Marshall Granger will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m. at Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Madison, the Rev. Jim Kopco, Father David Booher and Father Gary Butterworth officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the Winns Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Monday from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Susan Granger, 75 North Main Street, Halifax.
