Mrs. Elizabeth Garrett Riley of South Boston died Friday, April 4, 2014, at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 98.
Mrs. Riley was born in Halifax County on Aug. 18, 1915 to the late Mr. Embra Garrett and Mrs. Maude West Garrett. She was first married to the late Mr. Arthur Dortch and later married the late Mr. Burnice Riley.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Nettie Bell, of St. Albans, N.Y.; three nieces, the devoted Mrs. Edith Gillespie of South Boston, Mrs. Brenda Govan of Hempstead, N.Y. and Ms. Wanda Garrett of Richmond; three nephews, the devoted Rev. Finley Fields of South Boston, Mr. John Fields and Mr. George Garrett, both of New York; one sister-in-law, Ms. Gussie Garrett, of Richmond; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husbands and parents, three brothers, Mr. Lawrence Garrett, Mr. Willie Garrett and Mr. Oliver Garrett, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Easley and Mrs. Maude Bullock, also preceded Mrs. Riley in death.
Funeral services for Mrs. Riley will be Saturday, April 12, at 3 p.m. at Ellis Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Finley Fields and Bruce Featherston officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Edith Gillespie, 111 Rosehill Drive, Apt. 1, South Boston.
Public viewing for friends will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at The Crawford House chapel in Halifax.
