Mrs. Marie Burrell of St. Albans, N.Y., formerly of Halifax County, died March 16, 2014 at the age of 82.
Mrs. Burrell was born in Halifax County on Feb. 22, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Mr. James Scotty Medley and Mrs. Virgie Medley. She was married to the late Mr. William Burrell Sr. and later married Mr. Alexander Covington. She worked in the school system, management positions at various restaurants and provided home care.
Mrs. Burrell is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Susie Carver of South Boston, Ms. Mary Burrell of New York, Mrs. Evon Patterson of South Carolina and Mrs. Virgie Waters of Baltimore, Md.; one son, Mr. William Burrell Jr. of Baltimore; three adopted children, Brandi, Diane and Mr. Irvin Covington, all of New York; two brothers, Mr. James Medley Jr. and Mr. Haywood Johnson Jr., both of New York; one sister, Minister Regina Wilkerson of South Boston; one aunt, Ms. Katie Johnson Duncan; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husbands and parents, one infant son, William Burrell; two sisters, Ms. Charlotte and Ms. Bernice Johnson; and two brothers, Mr. Leon Medley and Mr. Iris Johnson, also preceded Mrs. Burrell in death.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 20 at noon at Crowe’s Funeral Home in Jamaica, N.Y.
