Community pays final respects

The Honorable Franklin Marshall Slayton served his nation, state and community in many ways, and that service was reflected in those gathering for a Service of Witness to the Resurrection for Slayton Friday at First Presbyterian Church in South Boston.

The possibility of rejoining Governor’s School will be further addressed this evening at 5:30 when the Halifax County School Board holds a work session in the school board conference room in Halifax.

His opponent, Tracy Quackenbush Martin, disagrees and says she is the person committed to bringing justice and service to that office after hearing the community call for a change.

Funeral services for the Honorable Franklin Marshall Slayton will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in South Boston today at 2 p.m., with the Revs. Dr. Russell Lee and George Gorman officiating.

Pastor elected state NAACP vice president

The Rev. Kevin L. Chandler, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in South Boston, was elected vice president of the state NAACP during the 78th Annual Virginia State Conference NAACP held at the Hilton Hotel & Spa at Short Pump in Henrico County on Oct. 26.
