Brick by brick, construction crews started working Tuesday to demolish the bank building standing at the intersection of Florence Avenue and Seventh Street in Virgilina.
Construction continued into the week, and by Friday, Virgilina Fire Chief Ralph Murray said, “Things are coming along.”
The roof and the front of the bank have been taken down.
According to Donald Ellington, project leader, construction workers are hoping to preserve as much of the historic bank building as possible.
Ellington plans to knock down the first half of the building and the wall that now separates the back half of the building.
“We have to take it down almost brick by brick because we don’t want to hit the power line. We aren’t going to bring in a wrecker or anything,” added Ellington.
The project is expected to be complete in a few weeks.
After demolition, Ellington said he hopes to begin the rebuild – constructing something to “bring more business to Virgilina, like maybe a pizza pub.”
