Transportation coordinator back in ‘driver’s seat’

Since starting the position on Feb. 27, the new Halifax County School Transportation Coordinator Dwight Elam is beginning to get a feel for things within the school system.

A Mecklenburg County resident, Elam brings with him experience in their school system.

Before working for the DMV as a commercial compliance agent, Elam worked with Mecklenburg County schools for 21 years.

His positions there included transportation trainer, transportation coordinator and transportation specialist.

“After being in the transportation department for so long, I had a desire to continue working in that field, so when I saw the opening here in Halifax I decided to get back into it,” said Elam.

Elam grew up in Mecklenburg County and continues to reside there. He gained his B.S degree in biology at Virginia State University.

“I can’t answer that,” said Elam, laughing as he tried to explain how he studied science before finding a profession with transportation.  “It’s just where life took me.”

Now that he’s found his spot in the Halifax County School Division, he is working with staff trying to get things up and running to meet their standards.

His time is being spent learning bus routes, drivers, handling field trips assignments and “just trying to get acclimated to how the Halifax County Transportation Department operates.”

His duties also include training, evaluating road conditions, working with parents and handling conflicts on the buses, including reviewing tapes on the buses.

Elam says everything has been “great so far.”

“There is a good system with good people. Everyone has been supportive and helpful,” said Elam.

He hopes to continue to help the system maintain its record and to continue having a good working relationship with the school system and the community.

Elam came to the position following the resignation of former Transportation Coordinator Earl Womack.

The Halifax County School Board approved hiring Elam at an annual salary of $52,000 following its closed session meeting in February.
