No charges in wreck at busy intersection

No one was charged in a wreck that occurred Sunday at the intersection of North Main Street and Hamilton Boulevard in South Boston.

According to an accident report filed by South Boston Police Officer C. L. Collie, 55-year-old Shelia F. Brooks of South Boston was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier traveling south on North Main Street. She said her light was green when the Cavalier was struck in the driver’s side by a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by 27-year-old Corlis W. Harris.

Harris was traveling west on Hamilton Boulevard, and she said her light had just turned yellow.

Both parties sustained minor injuries and were transported to Halifax Regional Hospital.

Collie estimated damage to the Chevrolet at $5,000 and damage to the Nissan at $6,000.

No one was charged or hurt in a single-vehicle wreck that occurred Friday evening on Old Cluster Springs Road.

According to an accident report filed by Virginia State Trooper B. L.  Crews, 46-year-old John Harlow of Virgilina was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 when he hit an icy spot on the road and slid off the road almost going into a creek.

Crews estimated damage to the Dodge at $3,500.

A 23-year-old South Boston woman was charged with reckless driving/failure to maintain proper control in a single-vehicle wreck that occurred Saturday morning on Traynham Grove Road, one mile south of State Route 658.

According to an accident report filed by Virginia State Trooper L. V. Pambid, Amber Sherie Grant was driving a 2001 Subaru Legacy Wagon when she lost control of the vehicle, ran off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned.

Grant sustained minor injuries but was not transported. Her passenger, 24-year-old Rico Lipscomb, sustained minor injuries and was not transported, while her other passenger, 23-year-old Kayla Norwood, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Pambid estimated damage to the Subaru at $1,500.

No one was charged in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred Saturday afternoon on State Route 716, one tenth of a mile west of State Route 729.

According to an accident report filed by Virginia State Trooper J. R. Abbott, 47-year-old Sharon Gee of Sutherlin was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee delivering mail when she was struck in the rear by a 2010 Honda Civic  driven by 63-year-old Ronald Pate of South Boston.

Neither party was injured.

Abbott estimated damage to the Honda at $3,500 and damage to the Jeep at $1,000.

A 57-year-old Ringgold woman was charged with failure to yield the right of way following a wreck that occurred Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 58 and Hackberry Road.

According to an accident report filed by Crews, Tina Lea was driving a Ford Windstar traveling east on Highway 58 when 27-year-old Ashly Clayton of Nathalie, who was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus, entered Highway 58 from Hackberry Road and struck the Windstar in the side.

Neither party was injured.

Crews estimated damage to the Windstar at $1,300 and damage to the Taurus at $3,000.

 A 33-year-old South Boston woman was charged with reckless driving/failure to maintain proper control following a single-vehicle wreck that occurred Saturday afternoon on State Route 607, one mile north of James D. Hagood Highway.

According to an accident report filed by Virginia State Trooper P. W. Leath, Elizabeth Bomar was driving a 2005 Grand Cherokee when she ran off the right side of the road and struck two mailboxes, a telephone junction pole and a utility pole. 

She was not injured.

Leath estimated total damage to both mailboxes at $200, damage to the telephone junction box owned by Century Link at $1,000 and damage to the utility pole owned by Dominion Power at $800.

 A 43-year-old South Boston man was injured and transported following a single-vehicle wreck that occurred Saturday evening on Highway 360 in front of South Boston Speedway.

 According to an accident report filed by Crews, Russell White Jr. was driving a 1998 Toyota 4 Runner when he lost control on an icy patch of road, ran off the right side of the road, overturned and struck a parked utility trailer.

White was not charged. 

Crews estimated damage to the Toyota at $3,500 and damage to the utility trailer owned by Paul Mabe at $1,000.
