Cathy Cosby, a familiar face at the Halifax County Courthouse for over 30 years, was sworn in Friday as Halifax County Circuit Clerk of Court.
Judge Joel Cunningham swore Cosby in during a ceremony in the circuit court room witnessed by Cosby’s family, friends and co-workers.
“My door is always open,” Cosby remarked after being sworn in.
Cosby added she would use her years of experience to help her do the best job possible in performance of her duties.
Cosby has been employed at the Halifax County Circuit Court for over 35 years, first as deputy clerk and for the last 26 years as chief deputy clerk.
“I am very fortunate to have served under two clerks, Robert “Bobby” Conner and the late Julian Sizemore,” Cosby said in a statement.
“I have always enjoyed my job at the clerk’s office, and I am well qualified to serve as circuit court clerk. It is a job I love and take very seriously. I am capable of performing all of its duties and responsibilities.
“I look forward to using my years of service along with my experience to further improve the services provided by the clerk’s office,” she added.
“I am grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to serve our judicial system, the citizens of Halifax County and the public,” continued Cosby.
“Along with the staff, it will be our goal to serve you by providing excellent customer service and knowledge of the legal system.
“I am committed to enhancing the services provided and the needs of the customer. I will practice an open door policy at all times in order to address any concerns and recommendations from the public.”
Joining Cosby for the swearing in ceremony were her husband, Alvin Cosby Jr., and children Dabney Cosby and Mary Beth Cosby Skipworth, along with her mother, Velora Moore.
A lifetime resident of Halifax County, Cosby resides in Vernon Hill.
She is the daughter of Velora Moore and the late Willis “Doc” Moore.
“We have two wonderful children, Dabney Cosby and Mary Beth Cosby Skipworth, and two beautiful grandchildren, Dylan Puryear and Brooklyn Skipworth,” Cosby said.
“I ask the citizens of Halifax County for their prayers and support as I look forward to serving each of you as circuit court clerk at the beginning of January 2014 and also as a candidate for this position in the election.”
Cosby previously announced she would be a candidate in a special election in November to fill the unexpired term of former Halifax County Circuit Court Clerk of Court Bobby Conner.
Conner announced his retirement effective Dec. 31 after almost a quarter of a century as clerk of court.
