A Henderson man died from impact injuries at the scene of a high-speed collision on Poplar Creek Road (in Henderson, N.C.) Thursday.
A spokesman for the N.C. Highway Patrol confirmed 48-year-old Vernon Lynn Grissom of 463 Dabney Woods Lane was heading north driving a black 1996 Chevrolet Corvette at 2:15 p.m., when he lost control and struck a tree.
The patrol spokesman said a report filed by the investigating trooper indicated the Corvette was going approximately 80 miles per hour at impact. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car.
The posted speed limit in that section of Poplar Creek Road is 45 mph. Road conditions were noted as normal, according to the trooper’s report.
The spokesman said the vehicle went off the road on the right, skidded back onto the road, went off the road again to the right, struck a ditch and then the tree.
There were no other passengers in the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to the trooper’s report.
