Durwin Whitehead, the driver of a BMW involved in a two-vehicle wreck last Sunday on James D. Hagood Highway, remains in critical condition at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., a hospital spokesperson confirmed Sunday afternoon.
Whitehead was transported to Duke University Medical Center following the wreck that occurred at the intersection of Red Level Road and James D. Hagood Highway near Clover shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 22.
When firefighters and rescue personnel arrived on the scene, they found the BMW driven by Whitehead and a tractor-trailer, owned by Hudson Trucking of Drakes Branch, had collided.
Damages were extensive, according to volunteer firefighters who worked to extricate Whitehead from the BMW.
After impact, the BMW ended up in the median strip of the highway, while the tractor-trailer crashed against the guardrail on the right side of the road.
Both eastbound lanes were blocked for a brief period of time, while volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel extricated Whitehead from the vehicle.
Attempts to airlift Whitehead were unsuccessful that evening due to inclement weather conditions, according to volunteer EMS personnel at the scene.
Oil and fuel spilled onto the highway prompting firefighters to ask Virginia Department of Transportation to bring a sand truck to the scene to clean up the spill.
Attempts last week to get the official accident report from Virginia State Police were unsuccessful since the officer investigating the wreck has been off for the Christmas holiday, and no report had been filed at the state police office, according to a Virginia State Police spokesperson.
