Driver trapped in crash

Durwin Whitehead was injured in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Red Level Road and James D. Hagood Highway (Highway 360).

When firefighters and rescue personnel arrived on the scene, they found a tractor-trailer owned by Hudson Trucking of Drakes Branch had collided with a BMW that caught fire while the driver was still trapped inside.

Damages were extensive, according to volunteer firefighters who worked to extricate Whitehead from the BMW.

Attempts to airlift Whitehead, the driver of the BMW, were unsuccessful due to inclement weather conditions, so Halifax County Rescue Squad transported him to Halifax Regional Hospital, according to volunteer EMS personnel at the scene.

After impact, the BMW ended up in the median strip of the highway, while the tractor-trailer crashed against the guardrail on the right side of the road.

Both eastbound lanes were blocked for a brief period of time while volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel extricated Whitehead from the vehicle.

Volunteer firefighters from Clover, Scottsburg and Drakes Branch responded to the wreck scene along with Halifax County Rescue Squad.

Oil and fuel spilled onto the highway prompting firefighters to ask Virginia Department of Transportation to bring a sand truck to the scene to clean up the spill.

No further details were available at press time Sunday evening.

Virginia State Police are investigating the wreck.
