No new leads after search for missing man

Search and rescue teams from across the state spent the weekend combing wooded areas in the Mt. Laurel community searching for any trace of 61-year-old James Oliver Brown, a Mt. Laurel community resident who has not been seen since Thanksgiving Day.

The search that began Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and continued into the day Sunday yielded no new evidence of what may have happened to Brown.

According to Halifax County Sheriff Fred S. Clark, the search included wooded areas near Neal’s Corner Road and extended beyond areas previously searched.

“Everyone continued searching in the rain on Sunday,” Clark said, “but we haven’t come up with anything. Not a trace.”

With all leads exhausted, the sheriff and family members had hoped the weekend search would provide some indication as to what may have happened to Brown.

On Saturday and Sunday, numerous search teams and cadaver dogs from across the state were joined by local volunteers who searched areas already searched and then extended the search “a lot farther out,” Clark said.

John Brown, Brown’s brother was on the scene as searchers looked for his brother who was last seen by a friend on Neal’s Corner Road on Thanksgiving Day when he said he was going to his mother’s house.

Brown often walked from his residence along a path through the woods to get to his mother’s house, Clark said.

“This simply isn’t like him to do this,” Brown said of his brother’s unexplained disappearance.

Clark and Brown thanked Halifax County Rescue and EMS, Virginia State Police, sheriff’s deputies and searchers from across the state who spent their weekend looking for the missing man.

“I ask anyone with any information about my brother’s whereabouts to please come forward to the sheriff’s department,” Brown said Sunday.

Family members reported him missing on Tuesday, Dec. 10, some 12 days after he was last seen.

Brown is described as a black male, 6-feet-tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Also, he has a large mole between his right cheek and right eye.

Clark said Brown has no known medical conditions.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of James Oliver Brown is asked to contact the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 434-476-3334.
