Library system taps new director

Jay Stephens has been hired as the new director of the Halifax County/South Boston Public Library System.

Bee Edmunds Espy, chairman of the Halifax County/South Boston Library Board, made the announcement Sunday afternoon.

Stephens will begin his duties as the director on Monday, Jan. 6.

He comes to the library system from his position as director of the Perry Memorial Library in Henderson, N.C.

“With over 15 years of experience as director for libraries in North Carolina, Virginia and Florida, Jay brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our system, and we are sure he will guide our library system effectively,” Espy said when making the announcement.

“We look forward to Jay working with the board, staff, patrons and various agencies in our community,” she added.

Stephens’ hiring concludes the search for a new director that began in September when former Director Joe Zappacosta resigned.

Zappacosta’s last day was Sept. 30, and the board accepted applicants to fill the position through the end of October.

According to Espy, six individuals applied for the position.

Three of those individuals were interviewed before a final decision was made.

Stephens will be introduced to the board on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. during a special called meeting at the Halifax Library.
