Coalition funding tops agenda for South Boston Town Council

A funding request from the Virginia Coalition heads the agenda for tonight’s South Boston Town Council work session.

The meeting is set to get underway at 5:45 p.m. at council chambers on Yancey Street.

The Virginia Coalition, a group founded to keep the ban on uranium mining in Pittsylvania County and Virginia as a whole, received two contributions of $5,000 each from the Town of South Boston last year to assist in its ongoing efforts against lifting the ban.

The group is again asking the town for financial support in its efforts to fight lifting of the ban, with council agreeing at its Aug. 26 meeting it needed more information before making a decision. The finance committee is set to consider one other item at tonight’s meeting, the monthly finance report.

The current issues committee will study two items at tonight’s meeting, including zoning ordinance and map revisions, and proposed rules and regulations for the Washington-Coleman Community Center.

Council will convene as a whole tonight to make appointments to the Lake Country Development Commission before going into closed session to discuss disposition of real estate.
