Candidate forums to be held in districts

The Halifax County Chamber of Commerce and Halifax County Farm Bureau are cosponsoring Candidate Forums in Election Districts 2, 3, 6, as well as in the Town of South Boston. These forums are being held in an effort to educate citizens on the candidates’ views on issues and to encourage people to vote on Nov. 5.

The first of four Candidate Forums is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Mt. Laurel Ruritan Club in Election District 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Participants will include Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom West, who is running unopposed, and school board candidates Pattie Hatcher, Karen Hopkins and Ida Terry.

Nick Long, general manager 95-3 WHLF FM, will be the moderator.

Commonwealth’s attorney candidates are invited to participate in two of the four forums, Oct. 8 and Oct. 29. The two candidates are Mike Freshour and Tracy Quackenbush Martin. Freshour has confirmed for both forums.

“Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5th. We believe holding the forums during October before the election may help generate interest among voters. The purpose of the forums is to help citizens learn about the candidates views on issues and decide for whom they would like to vote,” said Gray Ramsey, chairman of Halifax Forward, the chamber’s advocacy committee.

Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. RSVP to the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce at 434-572-3085 or This email address is being protected from spambots. The chamber and Farm Bureau are to jointly sponsoring these events, and encourage their members to vote on Election Day, Ramsey said.

“When these two organizations come together, that’s a strong message,” said Nick Long.  “These forums are held to help people understand the importance of citizen engagement and the importance of voting. Equally important is understanding what the issues are and where the candidates stand.”
