Scottsburg house fire ruled arson; reward offered for info

Halifax County authorities are offering a reward and seeking information from the public about a house fire that occurred July 28 at 2 a.m. at 6075 James D. Hagood Highway in Scottsburg.

According to Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders, the fire has been determined to be a result of arson.

Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department and South Boston Fire Department responded to the blaze at the unoccupied residence in the wee morning hours of July 28.

Emergency personnel were able to bring the fire under control within several minutes but remained on the scene for almost three hours.

After fire investigators with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Halifax County Emergency Services completed an investigation into the cause of the fire, Saunders said the investigation revealed the fire is a result of arson, and other causes have been ruled out.

“The fire is believed to have been intentionally started on the main floor in the living area. The investigation is on-going,” Saunders said.

A reward is being offered to anyone who can provide specific information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects who are responsible, he added.

Anyone with information can call the Halifax County Crime Hot Line number at 434-476-8445.

Persons with information can report tips anonymously, Saunders said.
