Sheds take tumble in strong South Boston storm

A localized heavy thunderstorm struck South Boston on Saturday leaving several residents without power and causing damage to structures at Lowe’s on Old Halifax Road.

According to a Lowe’s Store assistant manager, five to 10 of their storage building structures were destroyed in Saturday’s storm.

“We had a straight line storm come through the parking lot. There were heavy winds and heavy rains, and it took out our storage buildings that we had displayed out front,” the assistant manager said.

The storage units were destroyed completely, she added.

Store employees worked together to clean up the storm damage, and they plan to replace the storage building displays as soon as they are able to get more from their vendors, the assistant manager said.

Overall damage from the storm was minimal, according to Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders, who said that no significant damages from the storm had been reported to him.

According to its website, Dominion Power serves approximately 77,785 in Southside Virginia, and approximately 13 of those customers were still without power as of press time Sunday.
