South Boston man killed in Tuesday morning wreck

A 72-year-old retired first sergeant of the United States Marine Corps died in a wreck at about 8:10 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 8200 block of Route 626.

According to an accident report filed by State Trooper P.W. Leath, Murray Stephen Chipps, of Cage Trail was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pick-up north on Route 626 when he ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

He died on impact.

A dog in the truck with Chipps was not injured, and was taken from the scene by animal control. 

Leath estimated damage to the truck at $20,000, a total loss.

 

The Virginia Department of Transportation assisted emergency personnel with directing traffic.
