Fire damages vacant house in Scottsburg

An early Sunday morning fire damaged a vacant house in the Scottsburg community.

Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to report of a vacant two-story frame house engulfed in flames at 6073 James D. Hagood Highway.

According to Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Chief Jay Reese, Scottsburg firefighters arrived on the scene around 2:15 a.m. with two trucks and seven firefighters and were assisted by Halifax Volunteer Fire Department with two trucks and six firefighters and South Boston Fire Department with one truck and five firefighters.

Firefighters stayed on the scene until 5 a.m. dousing the flames with almost 2,000 gallons of water, Reese said.

The house did not have electricity, and the fire is believed to have started in a room in the front of the house, the fire chief said.

Total damage to the property has not been determined, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Reese said.
