Fuel spills near river in Wednesday accident

An overturned tractor-trailer spilled approximately 60 gallons of diesel fuel near the Dan River on Wednesday afternoon following a wreck that occurred on Highway 58 in Leggett’s Bottom.

According to Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders, emergency personnel responded at 5 p.m. to a report of an overturned tractor-trailer in Leggett’s Bottom.

The cargo truck carrying paper products, operated by Werner Enterprises, overturned near the Dan River crossing in the eastbound lane of Philpott Road. One eastbound lane was closed following the wreck for approximately four hours, Saunders said.

Numerous emergency personnel responded to the single-vehicle wreck including Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Transportation, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Halifax County Emergency Services.

Firefighters were able to contain the fuel spill and prevent further environmental contamination, Saunders said.

The driver and a passenger in the truck were both transported to Halifax Regional Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

Environmental Restoration Services from Raleigh, N.C, contracted by Werner Enterprises, responded to the scene late Wednesday evening to perform removal of the spilled fuel and contaminated soil.

The contractors are expected back in the coming days to complete the environmental restoration, Saunders said.

Virginia State Trooper K. R. Martin investigated the Wednesday afternoon wreck.
