Kitchen fire damages cabin; cause remains under probe

A South Boston man suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene of a house fire that occurred at 6:57 p.m. Sunday at 1120 Mulberry Farm Road.

Christopher McNaver was treated at the scene after fire damaged the house he was renting from Al Zimmerman, according to South Boston Police Chief Steve Phillips.

The fire, believed to have started around the stove in the kitchen, resulted in fire, heat and smoke damage to the entire wooden cabin located at the end of Mulberry Farm Road.

Phillips said 10 South Boston firefighters responded with two trucks and were assisted by eight volunteer firefighters and one truck from Midway Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze quickly, the fire chief said, but the house, valued at $65,000, sustained an estimated $20,000 in fire, heat and smoke damage.

The origin of the fire has not been determined, Phillips said.
