Summer came in with a bang at the pump. With the opening of Murphy Express gas station on Old Halifax Road on Thursday, the battle of the lowest price of unleaded gas began.
As of Sunday, both Murphy Express and neighboring gas station, Quality Plus, were both sitting at $2.95 for regular unleaded gas. Cars were lining up to get their tanks filled.
By the end of the weekend, surrounding gas stations were beginning to drop their prices as well.
According to the AAA fuel price finder, the area average for regular unleaded gas is $3.26, down from last month’s $3.28, but up from a year ago when it averaged $3.14.
The AAA Mid-Atlantic gas watch shows that 40.8 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday, .8 of a percent decrease from the 41.1 million people who traveled last year.
According to the current averages in Virginia, regular unleaded gas is $3.41 compared to a week ago in Virginia at $3.39. A year ago, gas could have been purchased for $3.23.
Management at Murphy Express refused to comment on the current “gas war” between the surrounding gas stations. Quality Plus management also declined comment for this story.
