The threat of storms headed toward Halifax County has prompted a flash flood and tornado watch.
The tornado watch was issued shortly after 2 p.m. Storms could produce tornadoes or winds with gusts up to 70 mph.
Flash flooding is possible through Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg. Numerous showers and storms are expected to move into the area with very heavy rain expected.
Flash flooding may happen if repetitive heavy rainfall occurs over the same area or if very heavy rainfall rates occur, the weather service stated.
Rainfall rates between 3 and 4 inches per hour are possible in any of the strong thunderstorms. The heavy rain is forecast to move in Monday afternoon.
Since the ground is already saturated, flash flooding of small streams will become likely.
