The season’s first tropical system will make for a soggy weekend for Halifax County.
According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Sporer in Blacksburg, the area can expect to see almost 2 inches of rain this weekend from the remnants of tropical storm Andrea.
Thursday morning the system had winds of 60 mph and had expanded in size but was not expected to strengthen to a hurricane before making landfall Thursday evening in Florida.
Much of the rain expected for Southside will continue through Friday and early Saturday.
Heavy winds aren’t expected to be a problem, since Andrea will steer far to the east of Halifax County, Sporer said. However, the heavy rains will be an issue.
“There is a chance of standing rain in roadways because of heavy rainfall at times,” said Sporer.
Sporer predicts that the tropical season is going to be above average this year.
The storm season, which officially began Saturday, doesn’t end until Nov. 30.
