School board member changes mind, will now seek re-election

After receiving several phone calls from supporters and her constituents, school board trustee Karen Hopkins recently decided to seek re-election in Election District 2.

Hopkins announced nearly a month ago that she would not seek re-election in November because she wanted to spend more time with her family, however she has reconsidered that decision.

“I spoke with the kids and convinced them I can do it. I have enjoyed it and working with the board members. I had a long talk with the kids and they’ve even gone out with me to get signatures,” said Hopkins.

According to Hopkins, who had previously served four years on the board and as chair, it takes at least two years to learn how things are done.

“It’s more like I’m continuing on…why am I not going to run, there is always going to be learning involved. Four more years, I can do this,” she added.

Hopkins plans to retain her remaining signatures by the weekend.

Also seeking election in district 2 is Scottsburg resident Lisa Hatcher.

The deadline for interested candidates to file applications with the registrar’s office is Tuesday, June 11.
