Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, area volunteer firefighters and search and rescue teams from Halifax and Pittsylvania counties searched late into the night Wednesday and early Thursday morning and continued their search Thursday morning for 91-year-old John Thomas Foster of the Birch-Elmo community.
According to Halifax County Sheriff Fred S. Clark, Foster is a 5-foot, 9-inch tall white male weighing 165 pounds. He has gray hair and blue eyes and was last seen by a school bus driver as he walked along Birch-Elmo Road in the western portion of the county Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
He was wearing a gray hoodie sweatshirt and grey dress pants with black shoes, Clark said.
Foster has no family living in the immediate area, but caretakers check on him regularly, the sheriff explained. The last time a caretaker spoke with Foster on Wednesday was around 3 p.m. when he saw him walking along Birch-Elmo Road, about two miles from Birchland Park.
“His caretaker said he walks the road all the time,” Clark said.
Foster is not known to have any health issues, but he may experience a mild case of dementia, he added.
While state police helicopters searched from the air, numerous volunteers assisted search and rescue team members in the ground search for Foster Wednesday evening and Thursday.
According to Clark, the search was called off at 2:30 a.m. Thursday and started again at 8 a.m.
Foster owns rental houses in Danville and in North Carolina; however, he was not located at any of the houses Thursday, the sheriff said.
Meanwhile the search continues, and the public is asked to report any sightings of Foster to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 476-4273.
