Turbine catches on fire at dam

A turbine on fire smoked up the inside of the Ridgewood Hydro Banister River Dam building located on L. P. Bailey Memorial Highway in Halifax Sunday morning.

According to Halifax Volunteer Fire Department spokesman H. C. Phillips Jr., 10 Halifax volunteer firefighters aboard three trucks responded to the initial call at 7:30 a.m. and were assisted by six South Boston Fire Department firefighters who responded with one truck. Two trucks and six firefighters from Liberty Volunteer Fire Department also responded.

Firefighters were unable to use water on the dam’s generator turbine, but they were able to extinguish the blaze using dry chemical extinguishers.

As firefighters worked to bring the fire under control, traffic on L. P. Bailey Memorial Highway was reduced to one lane for a brief period.

No one was in the building at the time the fire was reported, Phillips said.

Firemen remained on the scene for an hour and a half.

No damage estimate was available at press time.
