Festival raises money for Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department

Streets in Virgilina will be overflowing with festivalgoers Saturday as the town kicks off the 31st anniversary of Summerfest, the primary fundraiser for the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department.

This year’s celebration, which unofficially marks the start of the summer season in Halifax County, will get underway with a parade at 11 a.m., led by the three grand marshals, Jack Slagle, Ralph Owen Murray Sr. and Frasier Murray.

The lunch menu for Saturday includes barbeque sandwiches and stew by the bowl, as well as hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries and other foods, while barbecue pork and chicken plates will be available starting at 2 p.m.

A number of arts and crafts vendors will set up shop during the day, and games and rides for the kids will help keep them occupied.

Look for an appearance by the Centra Health and Life Flight helicopter during the afternoon.

Live entertainment starts at 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. beginning with Sourwood Mountain and including Hager Mountain Boys and Hi-Grass.

The Konnection Band will take the stage from 6 to 9 p.m. for the annual street dance to end the day’s festivities.

A Virgilina Volunteer Fire Association raffle for a $1,000 cash give away will be held at 9 p.m.

Those attending will have an opportunity to purchase a 31st anniversary T-shirt that will be for sale Saturday.
