School board expected to finalize budget Monday night

Halifax County School Board members are expected to finalize its already approved budget when they meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the public meeting room at the Mary Bethune office complex.

Board members also are expected to revisit guidelines for awarding employees credit for previous experience. 

Executive Director for Administration Valdivia Marshall presented the guidelines to board members at the April meeting, and board members decided to postpone taking action until the May meeting.

“It will bring consistency and fairness to the school system,” said Marshall at the April meeting of the proposed guidelines.

In other business, trustees are expected to hear a proposed revision in the code of student conduct from Director of Secondary Education/Accountability Frosty Owens, and Supervisor of School Food Services Lori Hale is expected to present a proposed increase in school lunch meals.

Halifax County Middle School Principal Faye Bruce is expected to offer a presentation to board members on middle school activities throughout the year.

Superintendent Dr. Merle Herndon is slated to give a report on activities scheduled for Staff Appreciation Day to be held Thursday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m., and the Rev. Frank Coleman is expected to speak during the citizen comment portion of the meeting.

Under new business, Chairman Kimberly Farson is scheduled to ask for approval of a late June school board meeting to be held June 24 at 5:30 p.m. to close out the financial school year and to change the August school board meeting from Aug. 12 to Aug. 15 due to a scheduling conflict.

Prior to adjourning, board members are expected to go into closed session to discuss personnel and student discipline.
