Man dies while in custody of South Boston police

Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a man who died early Saturday morning after being arrested by South Boston Police.

In a news release, South Boston Police Capt. B. K. Lovelace said officers responded at 4:28 a.m. to the Super 8 Motel for a call about a disorderly suspect who had done property damage.

Officers initially transported the subject to the hospital for evaluation where he became combative, the release stated, at which point he was placed under arrest.  

Upon arrival at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail, officers observed the man was suffering from a medical emergency, and emergency services was called.

Rescue personnel transported the subject to Halifax Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Lovelace said in the release.

No further details, including the suspect’s name, were released.
