Winners crowned at Junior Livestock Show and Sale

Halifax County High School student Ellen Crowder was one of the big winners at the 55th Annual Halifax County Junior Livestock Show and Sale held Monday at Halifax County Fairgrounds.

A total of 28 youth participated in this year’s show and sale, which concluded with the auction sale later in the day on Monday.

Crowder showed the grand champion market steer at the show, and she also received first-place recognition in senior cattle showmanship.

Jessica Conner showed the reserve champion market steer at the event.

Casey Garland and Courtney O’Shea also were double winners, with Garland taking home blue ribbons for showing the grand replacement heifer and the reserve replacement heifer.

O’Shea showed the grand champion market goat and grand champion doe goat, Sabrina Covington showed the reserve champion market goat, and Sara Beth Reese showed the reserve champion doe goat.

Elizabeth Wilkins showed the grand champion market lamb, and Camey Reese showed the reserve champion market lamb.

Cattle senior showmanship awards went to Crowder (first) and Jessica Conner (second), and cattle junior showmanship awards went to Rebecca McCormick (first) and Lauren Chaney (second), and Blake Anderson (third).

Sheep senior showmanship awards (first through third) went to Elizabeth Wilkins, Camey Reese and Thomas Satterfield, and sheep junior showmanship awards (first through third) went to West Conner, Alayna Newby and Kendall Crowder.

Goat senior showmanship awards (first through third) went to Courtney O’Shea, Lydia Ferguson and Sara Beth Reese, and junior goat showmanship awards (first through third) went to Heather Vespucci, Sabrina Covington and Samantha Vassar.

The Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association sponsored the grand and reserve champions for market goats at this year’s show, and the grand and reserve market steers were sponsored by Southern Virginia Beef Alliance and H&H Cattle, respectively.

Sponsors for the 2013 show included Farm Bureau Virginia, McDannald Construction, Inc., Farm Credit, Abbott Farm Suppliers, Inc., Halifax County Veterinary Center, PC and Huber Engineered Woods.

Other sponsors included BoCat Farms, Fear’s Excavating, Spaulding Equipment Company, Reese’s Farm Fresh Produce, H&M Logging, Springlake Stockyard, Camp Chemical, Southern States Petroleum, Ratliff Service Center and Helena Chemical.
