Wreck slices car in half; charges pending

A 70-year-old South Boston man was airlifted to Duke Medical Center on Friday afternoon following a wreck that occurred on River Road, about a half mile west of State Route 945.

Charges are pending against John Henry Petty, according to an accident report filed by State Trooper J. R. Abbott.

Petty was driving a 1995 Cadillac Deville when he ran of the right side of the road and struck a tree around 2:30 p.m. splitting the car in half.

Rescue personnel used the jaws of life to remove Petty who was trapped in the vehicle.

Traffic had to be rerouted around River Road while the extrication took place, authorities said.

Abbott estimated damage to the Cadillac at $4,500, a total loss.
