Massive fire injures pair, destroys auto repair business

Two people were injured in a massive fire that destroyed Beard’s Auto Repair on Tuesday afternoon.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen from miles away as numerous fire companies from throughout the county converged on the cinder-block structure on Beard’s Trail off Bold Springs Road in South Boston.

The blaze was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday when South Boston, Turbeville and Cluster Springs firefighters were called to a fire that had engulfed the single-story structure owned and operated by John Henry Beard. The roof had caved in as firefighters began attacking the blaze.

Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders was on the scene Tuesday evening, but details were scarce at press time.

A neighbor reported hearing a loud explosion come from the garage.

When he looked outside seconds later, he said he saw flames coming from the structure.

Two people, Sylvester Beard and Lloyd Newman, were being treated for injuries on the scene, according to the auto repair shop owner’s sister.
