Halifax County law enforcement officers converged in the 2000 block of Wilson Memorial Trail in the Vernon Hill community Thursday afternoon to search for Kennedy Smith, a 5-year-old girl with autism, whose mother reported her missing from her house shortly after 3 p.m.
According to Capt. T. E. Logan, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office canine Sidney, along with handler Deputy C. A. Bates V, discovered the young girl walking about a half of a mile from her house about a half an hour after she was reported missing.
When found, Smith “was fine and carrying a handful of flowers,” Logan said, noting she told officers she had picked the flowers for her mother.
Smith was returned to her mother safely.
