Reckless driving charged in Wednesday wreck

Traffic was backed up on Highway 58 east for more than an hour Wednesday as a result of a single-vehicle accident that occurred near Zimmerman’s Antique Shop.

Anthony Ellis Cooper, a 60-year-old Richmond man, was charged with reckless driving/failure to maintain proper control following the tractor-trailer wreck that occurred Wednesday morning, according to an accident report filed by Virginia State Trooper D. H. Hess.

Cooper was driving a Freightliner tractor-trailer when he ran off the right side of the road and went over the embankment causing the trailer to overturn, Hess said.

The driver was not injured.

Highway 58 was backed up for little over an hour while emergency personnel worked to clean up the mess. Crews remained on the scene approximately three hours and tried to keep at least one lane open for traffic a majority of the time, Hess said.

The trailer was carrying a full load, Hess said, but it is unknown what the load contained. Carr’s wrecking service pulled the truck from the embankment.

Hess estimated damage to the tractor-trailer at $20,000.
