Judge to be honored at Jubilee Day

The Honorable Joel Cunningham will be the recipient of the annual Cora Tucker Community Service Award to be presented Jan. 1 during the annual Jubilee Day Celebration at Banister Hill Baptist Church in Halifax.

The Halifax/South Boston branch of the NAACP will hold its annual Jubilee Day Celebration on Tuesday at the church located at 399 North Main Street in Halifax. The program will start at 11 a.m.

The speaker for this special occasion will be outgoing president, the Rev. Kevin L. Chandler, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in South Boston.  Music will be by HYM.

The new NAACP officers will be installed.

On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, freeing slaves from bondage.

The modern-day celebration, called Jubilee Day, pays tribute to that historical day.
