Christmas Eve fire at Dollar General causes $50,000 in damages to conveyer

South Boston Fire Department responded to an electrical fire at Dollar General Distribution Plant Monday night, but a sprinkler system had extinguished the blaze before firefighters arrived on the scene.

According to Deputy Chief Dwight Spangler, South Boston Fire Department arrived at 3207 Philpott Road with four trucks and 10 firefighters around 10:38 p.m. on Christmas Eve and remained on the scene until 12:21 a.m. Christmas morning.

Spangler said a wire had burned under the conveyer belt, and the sprinkler system extinguished the flames.

After firefighters investigated the area, they turned the matter over to building maintenance personnel, the deputy chief said.

Damage to the $680,000 conveyer belt was estimated at $50,000.
