SUV hits, injures elderly woman exiting Supply Line

An 81-year-old Virgilina woman was seriously injured and airlifted to Duke Medical Center after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in the Supply Line parking lot located at the intersection of Highways 360 and 58 in South Boston.

Norma Elliott suffered severe head injuries when she was hit by a 2004 Ford Escape driven by 80-year-old Janie Thorne of Randolph, according to an accident report filed by investigating State Trooper A. D. Dishman.

Thorne was pulling into a parking place at the front entrance to the store when she hit the gas instead of the brake, knocking down a post, running over the concrete curb and striking Elliott before running into the front of the building, the report stated.

Thorne was not injured.

Damage to the 2004 Ford Escape was estimated at $2,500, damage to the building’s wall was estimated at $1,000.

Charges against Thorne are pending, the report stated.

Elliott remained a patient at Duke Medical Center on Thursday where she was listed in serious condition.
