Man injured, charged in fiery wreck

A 73-year-old Nathalie man was injured and charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain proper control following a fiery wreck that occurred Monday afternoon on State Route 603, five-tenths of a mile east of State Route 627.

According to an accident report filed by investigating State Trooper J. R. Abbott, James J. Gassy was driving a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 when the truck ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and crossed over the center line. Then the Dodge ran off the right side again and struck an embankment before coming back onto the road and overturning. After overturning, the truck ran off the left side of the road and caught fire.

Gassy was injured and transported to the hospital by EMS.

Abbott estimated damage to the truck at $6,500.

No one was charged in a wreck that occurred Thursday afternoon on Halifax Road and Pine Lane.

According to an accident report filed by South Boston Police Officer J. J. George, 72-year-old Carl J. Sydnor of Halifax was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice when he attempted to turn onto Halifax Road and was struck by 67-year-old George R. Allen of Saxe who was driving a 1993 Ford truck and turning into the Apple Market.

No one was injured.

George said both vehicles sustained minor damage.

An 18-year-old South Boston woman faces a charge of failing to yield the right of way following a two-vehicle wreck that occurred Saturday evening at the intersection of Highway 501 and State Route 654.

According to an accident report filed by State Police Sgt. C. W. Owen, Laura P. Morfin was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier when she turned from northbound 501 onto westbound 654 and failed to yield the right of way to Timothy L. Womack of Halifax.

Womack was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche when he struck the Chevrolet Cavalier.

No one was injured.

Owen estimated damage to the Cavalier at $4,500 and damage to the Avalanche at $3,000.

A 58-year-old Appomattox woman was injured in a two-vehicle wreck that occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 501 and State Route 610.

According to an accident report filed by State Trooper Abbott, 28-year-old John W. Snead of Gladys was driving a 1988 Dodge Aries when he attempted to pass Michelle D. Camp, who was driving a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, and he ran off the left side of the road and overcorrected.

Snead then ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, while causing Camp to run off the left side of the road.

Camp sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS, and Snead was not injured.

Snead was charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain proper control.

Abbott estimated damage to both the Chrysler and Dodge at $1,000 each.
