A fire of unknown origin burnt approximately one-third of a Cedar Grove Road family’s winter wood supply before firefighters from Cluster Springs and Turbeville Volunteer Fire Departments could extinguish the blaze Monday afternoon.
According to Cluster Springs Volunteer Firefighter James Short, the fire is believed to have started in a pile of wood located near a metal carport and woodheater located at 4141 Cedar Grove Road in Alton and owned by Lee Vernon.
No foul play is suspected in the fire that was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Short said.
Firefighters used foam to smother the flames in the wood that had burned outside of and under the metal carport.
Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department responded with three trucks and eight firefighters, and Turbeville assisted with two trucks and five firefighters.
Short estimated the carport and wood heater were valued at $10,000, and the fire caused approximately $250 damage to the tin on the carport.
No one was injured in the fire, Short said.
