Crowd turns out to help Clover Volunteer Fire Department

Clover Volunteer Fire Department held its annual fall festival Saturday raising more than $21,000 during the all day event.

According to Chief Bert Martin, the fire department’s goal was between $14,000-$15,000, and after expenses he expects the department will clear over $13,000.

“It was a decent crowd throughout the day,” said Martin.

The day featured vendors selling jewelry, inflatables for the kids, live music, food to satisfy every taste, and the Centra One helicopter was available for viewing.

According to Martin, the fire department didn’t have many leftovers, and what little food was not eaten was taken home by volunteers.

Winners of the raffle ticket drawings included Kermit Wright, winner of the $1,000 grand prize; and $150 winners were Kelli Douglas, Darlene Downey, Sandra Delaware, Tom Arthur and Dwayne Griles.

Winners in the parade held earlier Saturday included first place pumper, Bacon District Engine 3; first place tanker, Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department; and first place mini pumper, Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department.

David Franklin and Bernard Boyd each placed first for their classic cars.

Martin said the money raised Saturday will go into the general operations fund.

“It was a great day, and we appreciate all the support from the community, and if anyone hasn’t donated and would like to, they can mail the donation to the Clover Volunteer Fire Department at P.O. Box 199, Clover VA 24534,” Martin concluded.
