Fundraiser falls shy, but still called a ‘good day’

Approximately 400 people attended the fundraising event held in South Boston’s Constitution Square from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday with perfect weather, and $10,000 was raised to hire a private investigator to help find retired Sgt. First Class Hattie Brown who was last seen May 16, 2009.

According to Brown’s sister, “Tee” Barksdale, the family was hoping to raise about $20,000. At this time, Barksdale said the family has no plans for further fundraising events, but it may hold an additional fundraiser next year.

Those in attendance enjoyed music and entertainment all day.

Full dinner plates were sold offering a choice of fish, barbecue or hot dogs, two sides, dessert and a drink. T-shirts featuring a picture of Hattie Brown were sold and worn by many of those attending the event.

Brown’s sister, Diane, expressed appreciation to all who came out to show support. “It was a good day,” she said.
